FG Appoints Dr. Ukekpe as Rector Federal Polytechnic Ukana

His academic credentials are not only intimidating but thought-provoking and inspiring. He’s cerebral, upwardly mobile and sound in mind and intellect.

Born on 2nd June, 1964 in Udi, Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Uduak Sunday Ukekpe’s life is a study in excellence, discipline and dedication.

The story of his strides in the education sector is not only engaging but fascinating if not intriguing. Married to one woman, Uduak obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) in 1976, while he got his GCE in 1981.

Through dint of hard work, he has earned several other academic badges including a B.Sc. in Chemistry, 1987; M.Sc (Applied Chemistry), 1991; Certificate in Computer Programming, 1996 and a Ph.D in Organic Chemistry, 2017.

Described by many as an administrator par Excellence who has value for both time and enduring results, Uduak belongs to some professional bodies which include: Member, Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN); Fellow, Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (ICCON); Fellow, Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria (Educational Administration) and Member, International Research and Development Institute.

He equally has a vast working experience that eminently stands him on a good stead to assume the coveted Rectorship position of Federal Polytechnic, Ukana. Ukekpe was a Class Teacher, Government Vocational Training College, Mariga, Niger State (NYSC) from 1987 to 1988; Chemistry Practical Instructor (Remedial Programme), University of Jos, Jos (Part-Time) from 1989 to 1990; Lecturer, College of Education, Gashua, Yobe State, 1992 to 1995; Lecturer, National Open University of Nigeria, Damaturu Study Centre (Part-Time) from 2009 to 2011; Chief Lecturer, Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu, Yobe State from 1995 till date.

In the course of these years of focus and dogged pursuit of excellence and uncompromising dedication to duty, Ukekpe, has demonstrated capacity, leadership prowess and the midas touch to get things done no matter the hiccups. A solution carrier, he has risen through the ranks in the lecturing ladder having been Lecturer ll from 1992 to 1994; Lecturer l from 1995 to 1998; Senior Lecturer, 1998 to 2003; Principal Lecturer, 2004 to 2008 and Chief Lecturer from 2009 to date.

A workaholic and result driven gentleman, Ukekpe has several Academic/Scholarly Publications to his credit. Some of the recent ones are: Uduak S. Ukekpe, Harami M. Adamu and Eno O. Ekanem (2018). Just recently, from 16th to 18th September, 2018, his paper, Hazardous Waste: Nature, Sources and Methods of Disposal and Management was presented at the 41st Annual International Conference of Chemical Society of Nigeria (CSN), University of Ibadan, Oyo State.

What is more, the cerebral Ukekpe has earned a number of professional achievements, honours and distinctions from various quarters. Some of such include: External Examiner, Yobe State Polytechnic, Geidam, Yobe State in the year 2005; External Examiner, Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, Nigeria, 2006 to 2009; awardee, TETFund Research Grant, 2015 and Alternate External Examiner, Yobe State University, Damaturu from 2006 till date.

He has equally held key administrative positions in Polytechnics to include: Department Examination Officer 1995 to 1999; Coordinator, Pre-ND Science and Technology Programme from 1999 to 2001; H.O.D. Science Laboratory Technology, 2001 to 2004; Director, School of Science and Technology, 2002 to 2006; Director, Students Affairs, 2006 to 2011 and Manager, Science and Technology Education Post-Basic (STEP-B) Project, 2017 till date.

He’s been Chairman, Students Disciplinary Committee from 1996 to 1999; Chairman, Examination and Timetable Committee, 2001 to 2007; Chairman, Staff School Management Board, 2005 to 2007, etc.

He has also made marks as Editorial Board Member, Sahel International Multidisciplinary Journal; Assessor, Sahel international Multidisciplinary Journal; Managing Editor, Nigeria Journal of Allied Science and Technology and Assessor, International Journal of Public Health.

As a man of many parts, he has been a Unit Coordinator/Member, Special Marshal, Unit 12.3.3, Federal Road Safety Corps; Patron, Akwa Ibom/Cross River States Students Association, Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu, Grand Patron, National Association of Computer Science Students, Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu, among others.

A man with an avid taste for reading, Ukekpe loves photography, football, swimming and volleyball. He speaks Annang, English and Hausa languages fluently.

Needless to say, Dr.Uduak Sunday Ukekpe, is highly experienced, humble and has wide contact and tentacles that will attract the much needed resources to Federal Polytechnic, Ukana.

The appointment of Dr. Uduak Ukekpe as Rector by Mr.President is timely and the right choice. Ukekpe knows his onions and has zero tolerance for laxity and excuses. He is, by every yardstick, the best man for the top job. The cap fits him. Let him wear it.
